TYLER, Texas -- It was a big night for Midwestern State freshmen as
Isabella Cruz and
Emilia Nunez tallied their first collegiate goals in the team's double overtime win against UT Tyler. Cruz found the back of the net thirty seconds in while Nunez grabbed the game-winner in the 103rd minute. The Mustangs take a 10-3-3 overall record and go 7-1-3 in Lone Star Conference play.
The mark stands as MSU's fourth straight win with the streak beginning on Oct. 20.
Leading scorer for Midwestern State,
Cassidy Savoy kicked the first goal sequence off with a nice lateral lay off to
Emma Baley on the left side of UTT's box. The senior drove towards the Patriot defense and dropped the ball back to for Cruz to run onto. The freshman midfielder's one touch shot sailed past Camri Cecil to put the visitors up 1-0. Baley gained her third assist of the season and fifth total point while Cruz earns four points with two added assists.Â
UT Tyler battled to find the equalizer, but Midwestern State went into halftime with a one goal lead. MSU out-shot UTT nine attempts to six while the Mustang defense did not allow any shots on goal for the Patriots in the first 45 minutes. Cecil collected three saves on the half.
The home side found their first notch of the match in the 51st minute on a Faith Adje shot from Kylie Criner in The Patriots high press. The tally was Adje's fourth of the season. Neither team could take the match and it headed into overtime.
Each side put up seven shots in the second half with
Lauren Freeman making four saves and Cecil registering two.
With two and a half minutes to go in the first overtime period, Midwestern State thought they found the game-winner after a corner put in by
Alyssa Salinas. Instead, the ref's goalkeeper obstruction foul on the Mustangs put the ball back into play.
In the final period of the match, Salinas drove a cross deep into UTT territory to find
Kelly Cannistra. The senior forward passed back to Nunez who took a touch and wound up to blow the ball through traffic and in to the lower left corner of the goal. Cannistra collected her first assist and 11th point with the helper while Nunez gained her third points.
MSU posted 18 shots on the night with seven landing on frame. UT Tyler tallied 15 attempts with five shots on goal. Freeman concluded the match with four saves while Cecil took five.
Midwestern State returns home to Stang Park for the last regular season home match on Nov. 3. Texas Woman's comes to town for a second and third place battle in the Lone Star Conference. The Senior Day match kicks off at 5 p.m.
