WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State dropped five spots to 24th in the latest American Football Coaches' Association Division II Poll released Monday afternoon.
The Mustangs suffered their second loss of the season Saturday night despite battling Tarleton State yard-for-yard before falling 17-14.
MSU peaked out a No. 11 in the Sept. 28 poll after opening the season with four straight wins. The Mustangs fell nine spots to No. 20 after taking their first loss of the campaign at Central Washington. Midwestern then spent the next two weeks at No. 19.
Midwestern State is one of eight teams from Super Region Four to receive mention in the poll joining No. 14 Colorado School of Mines, No. 19 Augustana (S.D.), No. 20 Western Colorado and No. 22 Colorado Mesa.
Minnesota Duluth, Angelo State and Wayne State (Neb.) are receiving votes.
Ferris State (Mich.) remained atop the poll for the second consecutive week after improving to 7-0 with a 38-10 win over Michigan Tech.
No. 2 Valdosta State beat Mississippi College, 41-14, while No. 3 West Georgia rolled past North Greenville (N.C.), 34-14 to setup a showdown between the two ranked squad Saturday in Valdosta.
No. 4 California (Pa.) and No. 5 West Florida each moved up a spot to round out the top five, while Colorado School of Mines slipped 11 spots to No. 14 following a 26-21 loss at Colorado Mesa.
Midwestern State plays host to Western New Mexico Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
