WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Kelly Ell posts her best offensive match of the season with 13 kills against Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon. Midwestern State picked up the first set, but could not complete the match and fell 1-3 to the Greyhounds. The drop pushes the Mustangs to an 11 game streak without a win and to a 1-11 Lone Star Conference record. Overall, MSU sits at 3-17 in 2021.
"Looking at the match, most of the time there were 4-5 freshman on the court," said Head Coach
Valerie Armstrong. "They are doing well learning and growing."
Taylor Anderson matched Ell with 13 put downs with each grabbing a block assist and 13.5 points. Ell touches 62 kills on the season in 209 attack attempts while Anderson tallies 124 smacks in 338 tries.
Kaitlynn Stoker moves into second place for MSU's total kill list with 42, earning nine against ENM. The junior collected two block assists and ten points on the night.
Alex Serna passed Stoker with three block assists for the Mustangs. The freshman slammed five kills in 22 attack to gain 87 on the season. The middle blocker totals 26 blocks in her first year at Midwestern State.
Amy DeWalt punched her ninth match with 15 plus digs, securing 17 versus Eastern New Mexico to lead the team with 287 overall. The freshman added two assists and a service ace to end her ten match drought.
Madison Becker and
Delaney Torres each made five passes with Becker tacking on an ace.
Kaitlyn Masseth adds two service aces to help the Mustangs gain their second-best service game of the year. The junior was the top setter for Saturday's battle with 21 assists and adding two kills and nine digs.
Regan Willms followed with 14 helpers and nine digs. The freshman continues to lead Midwestern State with 20 service aces, earning three versus ENM. The last time Willms notched an ace was on Oct. 2 against Texas Woman's.
"I thought Masseth and Willms distributed the ball well in a new line up," said Armstrong.
Eastern New Mexico's Jasmine Gannon led both teams with 13 kills and six service aces for 21 points. Adriana Puni follows with 14.5 points, split into eight kills and 11 blocks. Mikaela Garvin and Jordan O'Connor-Dempsey each record ten hits with Garvin gaining seven blocks. Rae Sapiga totals 23 assists for the Greyhounds in their clinch of 53 kills and a 0.306 hitting percent against the Mustangs.
Midwestern State takes their last road trip of the 2021 regular season next week, starting play versus St. Mary's. The Lone Star Conference match is set for Friday, Oct. 29 in San Antonio, Texas. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
