James Doyle's brace propels MSU to a late 4-2 comeback win over UT Tyler

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 7 Midwestern State's four second half goals pushed the team to a thrilling 4-2 victory over UT Tyler Wednesday night at Stang Park. James Doyle collected a brace while Julian Barajas and Carlos Flores also made tallies. The Mustangs keep their perfect Lone Star Conference record, now at 3-0 and move to 11-1 for the season.

The first period was interesting as neither team notched a shot until Trevor Amann ripped one in the 24th minute. The patriots shortly followed with their first notch of the night on Sergio Sola's solo effort at 24:26.

Down early, MSU made six more attempts before the halftime whistle sounded. The home side outshot the visitors 7-1 with Mathais Erikson punching three saves for UTT. Starting in goal for Midwestern State was Marc-Antoine Huzen.

Mere Escobar had a chance to tie the match in the 46th minute with a handball in the box by UTT. Escobar's attempt was pushed off the left post to keep the score frozen. In the end, Doyle collected the equalizer in the 55th minute to give the Mustangs hope. The tally counted for the midfielder's fifth goal of the season.

Malte Andres found UT Tyler's last goal of the night on a free kick from Shane Popieluch. With 21 minutes to play, the Mustangs pressed hard to find the go-ahead goals.

Fortune struck for MSU in the 77th minute when the referee sounded for a handball in the Patriot's box. This time around, Doyle stepped up and buried the ball past Erikson. Barajas followed shortly with his tick in the 79th minute to find what would be the game-winner. Barajas was able to chip the Patriot keeper to gain his fourth of the year.

Flores put the nail in the coffin after Escobar skipped the ball over UT Tyler's defense and into the path of Amann. The senior slid the ball to Flores streaming down the left side and the ball sailed between the near post and keeper. Flores registered his fifth tally in 2021.

Thierry Assamoi claimed a red card in the 90th minute from a breakaway foul on Max Gonzales. The final whistle sounded and the Mustangs grabbed the win.

Amann and Doyle each punched six shots to lead MSU while four Patriots had one attempt each. Overall, Midwestern State accumulated 25 shots with 11 on frame for the most of any match this season. UTT gained four shots and put three on target. Erikson walked away with seven save for the game while Huzen took one.

Next up for Midwestern State is a big match against Texas A&M International. The Mustangs take off to Laredo, Texas to face the Dustdevils in a Lone Star Conference game on Saturday, Oct. 23. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at Dustdevil Soccer Field.
