Bourne brings 12 kills to Mustangs' extended skid at Western New Mexico

SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Lauryn Bourne posted her sixth double-double of the season in Midwestern State's ninth straight loss. The Mustangs fell to Western New Mexico 1-3 after taking the first set in the Lone Star Conference match. MSU sits at 3-15 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

"We had a new line-up today and I was proud how the team worked through it," said Head Coach Valerie Armstrong. "We had our chances to go to five sets."

Bourne clinched 12 kills in 38 attacks and added 11 digs for her performance on the day. The sophomore continues to lead the Mustangs with 185 smashes in 68 total sets. Overall, Bourne has conducted 198 digs to sit second behind Amy DeWalt, who collected ten digs against Western New Mexico.

On the home side, Bria Augustine lead the match with 16 kills. The senior also knocked down two aces and 11 digs.

Taylor Anderson passed 100 kills for the season, notching eight versus the Mustangs in 25 attempts. The senior tallied 11 straight matches with at least one block, gaining four in the conference match. Alex Serna also completed eight knock downs and added two blocks to the day's stats.

Maggie Roe registered four blocks for WNM and completed 11 kills at the net. Kayla Judd contributed five to the home team's win.

Madison Becker posted two aces at the service line. The freshman put together nine aces for the 2021 season with 91 digs.

Autumn Roach controlled the setting spot in the team's 6-1 formation. The sophomore recorded 34 assists, the most since the team's match at Texas A&M International (9/17). Roach has notched 376 helpers this year and 950 in her two years at Midwestern State. Against Western New Mexico, the setter completed eight passes.

Madelynn Culp drew 26 assists and ten digs for the Mustangs. Eliana Moultrie led the way on the back line with 14 passes for WNM.

As a team, MSU completed 40 kills in 135 attacks to earn a 0.104 hitting percent facing Western New Mexico. The home team saw 53 kills in 143 attempts for a 0.203 hitting percent.

"We will regroup for home matches next week and look to improve each day to compete the best we can," said Armstrong.

Midwestern State returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum after a week hiatus. The Mustangs will face West Texas A&M on Friday, Oct. 22 in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Lone Star Conference match kicks off at 6 p.m.
