MSU claims three points with three goals over LCU

LUBBOCK, Texas -- No. 10 Midwestern State maintains their perfect Lone Star Conference record with a 3-0 win over Lubbock Christian. With goals by Trevor Amann, Julian Barajas and James Doyle, the Mustangs collect a 10-1 standing for the 2021 season.

Amann grabbed his tenth goal of the season in the 33rd minute of play. A scramble outside of LCU's box saw Barajas pop out with possession after evading a Chaparral defender on the ground. The midfielder sliced the ball through the home side's back line to find Amann headed toward's goal. MSU stood up 1-0 with 17 to play.

The remainder of the half proved uneventful for both teams as Midwestern State amounted four shots and Lubbock Christian pulled three. Neither Marc-Antoine Huzen nor Braxton Thorne made any saves for their respective teams.

The latter half proved much more exciting as Barajas put the second goal past Thorne at 57:39. On a short corner, Mere Escobar whipped the ball to the back post where Nathan Toledo stood ready. The defender redirected the ball towards the mass of bodies in the middle of the six yard box where Barajas snuck it into the goal. Barajas notched his third goal and fifth assist while Toledo took home his first Mustang point.

Already down, luck was not on Lubbock Christian's side as Jelle Born was shown a straight red in the 86th minute. Down by a man, the Chaparrals gave up a penalty kick with a foul on Amann in the box. Doyle stepped up to the spot and sank it past the frustrated Thorne.

MSU concluded the half with five shots to total eight attempts while LCU took eight tries for 12 total. Huzen landed two saves in the second period while Thorne did not have any.

Midwestern State returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 20, with another Lone Star Conference face-off. The Mustangs go head-to-head with UT Tyler at Stang Park in Wichita Falls, Texas. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
