WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Emma Baley notched her first goal of the season while
Kelly Cannistra pulled out her fourth tally in Midwestern State's Saturday night loss to No. 10 Dallas Baptist. The Lone Star Conference match ended 4-2 in favor of the visitors. The Mustangs sit at 6-3-3 overall and maintain a 3-1-3 LSC record.
DBU opened up play early in the game with Delaney Schmidt completing a goal at 8:54. Abigail Olmos launched the ball into the box from a corner kick and Ashley Merrill headed the ball down to Schmidt to put the Patriots on the board.
Jenna Patterson repeated the feat in the 33rd minute after
Taylor Camp punched away Summerlyn Heller's cross. Unfortunately for MSU, the ball landed right to Patterson at the top of the box whose shot swerved through traffic and into the bottom corner of the net.
Less than two minutes later, Dallas Baptist had their third goal of the game. Abigail Olmos intercepted a pass from the Mustang defense and slid the ball into Madison Parks who curved it in past Camp.
Midwestern State did not tally a shot until
Isabella Cruz's attempt in the 37th minute of play. This looked to be the home side's only chance until
Makenna Gaenzle's cross from the right side line flew under Hailey Brown's dive and into the path of Baley. With one touch, the forward put the Mustangs on the scoreboard.
In the first half, Camp collected three saves against 13 shots while Brown made one save against MSU's two attempts. The Patriots recorded three corner kicks and the Mustangs gained two.
Lauren Freeman took the spot between the posts for the next 45 minutes. The junior transfer made five saves in her second appearance of the season.
The only goal Freeman gave up was from Merrill in the 60th minute. Following a free kick deep in the Mustangs' defensive third, Michelle Gonzalez swung a ball into the box where Madison Smalley's slightest header pushed the ball toward's Freeman and the goal. Merrill got to the ball first and found the back of the net.
Midwestern State did not give up as
Nicole Marsolek played a long ball to
Randi Heaton. Heaton controlled the ball on the edge of DBU's box and put the cross in to find Cannistra streaming in from the backside. Cannistra has eight points on the season with the netter.
MSU put up eight shots in the second half to gain ground on the Patriots, but could not avail. Dallas Baptist put up seven attempts and Brown made five saves.
Midwestern State travels to Texas A&M-Commerce for another Lone Star Conference match. The Wednesday, Oct. 20 battle will take place at Lion Soccer Field in Commerce, Texas. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
