LUBBOCK, Texas -- Midwestern State could not find the offensive drive to outscore nationally ranked Lubbock Christian in the Wednesday night match-up at Rip Griffin Center, which snapped MSU's five-game winning streak.
Â
A few unfortunate turnovers for the Mustangs gave the Lady Chaps an early 9-0 lead. Two back-to-back baskets by senior guard
Haevyn Risley put MSU back in the game, followed by a quick knockdown by junior forward
Hannah Reynolds.
Â
Midwestern State stuck with Lubbock Christian in the first quarter, trailing only by one. Risley led all players with six points, going three for three in the quarter.
Â
The second period started neck-in-neck with LCU hurt from fouls and MSU kept in the game with jumpers from sophomore guard
Frances King, who shot 50 percent in the quarter. Fellow sophomore guard
Sheridan Bostic added a five-points to tie at 23 all.
Â
The Lady Chaps answered with a seven-point run halted by a layup by Reynolds with 1:40 left. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the half with Lubbock Christian ahead by ten.
Â
King started the third with a basket and added four more points in that quarter. She led the team with twelve points followed by senior guard
Morgan Lenahan who put up all ten points in the final period. Lubbock Christian edged out Midwestern with an 8-0 run in the fourth to seal the deal.
Â
As a team, the Mustangs shot 61 percent for free throws and almost 40 percent from inside the arc.
Â
Allie Shulte scored her 1000 career point for the Lady Chaps and had 20 points in the game. Ashton Duncan also had 20.
The Mustangs (7-3, 6-3 LSC) head back to Wichita Falls and D.L. Ligon Coliseum for the second half of the series against the Lady Chaps on Saturday, Jan. 30. Tip off is set for 3:30 p.m.
