WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The back end of two-game sets perpetuated by the Lone Star Conference's COVID-19 bubble schedule have been an issue for Midwestern State.
The Mustangs' two losses this season came in the exact scenario they faced Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. How did MSU fare following Friday's big win against UT Tyler?
Well, the Mustangs used a quick start, then glided to a 75-50 win over the Patriots to improve to 5-2 on the season. It was their seventh straight win on the home floor.
"We were preaching in the fast turnaround that we had to start out quick because Tyler's not going to quit," MSU coach
Christopher Reay said.
The Mustangs piled up 30 points in the first period and led 47-19 at the half before tired legs caused by a shortened bench to the injuries slowed them down.
Sophomore guard
Frances King paced the team with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers. She also dished out five assists.
"She has to learn that each game is going to be a different way for her to score," Reay said. "Some teams are going to let her get to the rim and she needs to take that. Some teams are going to let her get to her mid-range. She hit one of those today and had a 3. She has to pick her poison as how she is going to attack the basket."
Senior guard
Morgan Lenahan continued to shine pouring 18 points on the strength of three 3-pointers. She even grabbed eight rebounds being pressed into the rotation at the four (forward) position. The Mustangs outscored the opposition by 29 with Lenahan on the floor.
"This is what we can expect of her night in and night out," Reay said. "Some teams are going to try to take her away like UT Tyler did last night when didn't score as much but threatened a triple double."
Freshman forward
Brittney Fields improved her career high to nine points while making her second straight start. The Collinsville High School graduate grabbed eight rebounds and knocked down all but one of her six free throw attempts. More impressively, she sported a +25 in her 26 minutes on the floor.
Shequana Jackson and Azaria Reed scored nine points each to pace the UT Tyler (0-6).
Midwestern State takes on Texas Woman's Friday night at Kitty Magee Arena. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
