WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Lauren Lindgren and
Zach Purcell earned Lone Star Conference Scholar Athlete honors as released by league officials Tuesday afternoon.
Lindgren, a recipient of the Marie Morgan Award, presented to the top student-athlete at MSU Texas, carries a perfect 4.00 grade-point average. The special education major, who will graduate in December, was a finalist for the Clark Scholar in 2018 and the Hardin Scholar in 2019, the two highest academic awards at Midwestern State.
The Denton, Texas native is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Golden Key International Honor Society. She has also earned President's Honor Roll status three times.
On the field, the softball standout was hitting .394 (28-for-71) with two home runs and 16 RBI before the COVID-19 pandemic halted play. Lindgren cracked a game-winning home run in her final collegiate at-bat to lift the Mustangs to an upset win over No. 2 UT Tyler. The senior led the team with 10 doubles, a figure that ranked third in the Lone Star Conference and eighth in Division II.
Lindgren owns a .338 career average at Midwestern State and is the only player in school history to record back-to-back 1.000 fielding percentages.
Last season, Lindgren earned third team Google Cloud Academic All-America honors, joining Lauren Craig, who garnered first-team honors in 2010, as the only student-athletes in program history to earn the distinction.
Purcell, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance this spring, sported a 3.80 grade-point average.
The Kingwood native was named to the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll on seven occasions, while working his way up the quarterback depth chart.
Purcell was a member of two NCAA Division II playoff teams and was a reserve signal caller on MSU's Lone Star Conference championship squad of 2017.
Purcell claimed a starting role last season passing for 765 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions over the first four games which included a 323-yard, three-touchdown performance in a win over FCS Northwestern State in the season opener.
Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete to one male and one female student-athlete at each member institution. These student-athletes are selected as representatives for the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and leadership that are displayed on campus each year.
To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have participated in at least two years in their sport and be a member of the graduating class.
