Hamilton brings big-time shooting to Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Transfer forward Luke Hamilton is the type of player Midwestern State coach Justin Leslie needs to spread the floor.

The 6-8 sharpshooter spent the last two seasons at Division I Mercer, but will now don the Maroon & Gold starting with the 2020-21 season.

"My consistent goal in this recruiting class has been to get taller at each position and improve our shooting. Luke checks both of those boxes as he is the type of forward that we need in our system in order to make things work," Leslie said. "He possesses deep range on his shot that will enable us to spread the floor more effectively. The MSU fans will definitely see him make a lot of 3s in a Mustang uniform!"

Hamilton competed in 32 games at Mercer over the past two seasons averaging 2.7 points and 1.9 rebounds per game, but flashed plenty of potential for the Bears.

He enjoyed a breakout performance just 10 games into his frosh campaign connecting on three triples and hit a clutch free throw to clinch a 77-73 win over UNC-Wilmington on Dec. 21, 2018. He hit three 3-points on his way to a season-high 11 points later in the year to help Mercer past Samford, 65-62.

Hamilton competed in seven games at the beginning of his sophomore campaign last fall. He connected on 41.7 percent from the arc going 10-for-24 during the games to average 3.7 points and 1.9 rebounds.

The 2018 graduate of Lake Travis High School in Austin competed on a very deep and talented basketball squad during his prep career.

Hamilton earned second-team All-District 25-6A honors as a senior in 2018 helping the Cavaliers to the regional final. He was also member of Lake Travis High squads which advanced to the regional quarterfinals in both his sophomore and junior campaigns along with teammates Garrett Wilson and Daniel Thorpe.

Wilson, once the top football recruit in Texas, is currently a wide receiver at Ohio State, while Thorpe, the son of former NBA player Otis Thorpe, continued his basketball career at California of the Pac-10 Conference.

Hamilton also played a huge role in leading his ATX Lockdown club team to multiple Great American Shootout titles.

He joins a deep signing class for Midwestern State joining transfer Jermane Carter (New Mexico Military Institute) and prep standouts Amaechi Chukwu (Denton Guyer HS), Travis Massey (Grandview HS), Rommell Williams (Mayde Creek HS) and Pierre Sanders (Hutto HS).
