Midwestern State opens busy day with win over Colorado Mesa

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – 15th ranked Midwestern State made it two straight wins to open the Wichita Falls Invitational with a 7-0 shutout of Colorado Mesa on Friday morning at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs, who will face Colorado State-Pueblo this afternoon, raced out to an early lead with a clean sweep in doubles.

Ashley Ramirez/Taylor Gray opened the match with a 6-1 win over Kristen Kirby/Laura Alsing. Lea Cizeron/Casie Curry followed with a 6-3 victory at number two to clinch the doubles point.

Juliette Mary/Emilija Visic made it a clean sweep at number three, downing Carolena Campos/Halle Romero, 7-5.

"They are learning to play doubles together," MSU Texas head coach Scott Linn said. "They are all starting to communicate really well and appreciate each others strengths. I saw them today willing to work through situations and that is nice to see."

The Mustangs rolled to straight set wins at the number four and number two singles spots to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Mary steamrolled Campos, 6-0, 6-2 before Ramirez rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

At number one, Cizeron bounced back from a loss yesterday, relying on her forehand to defeat Kirby, 7-6, 6-3 to clinch the win for the Mustangs.

"I was very emotional at the beginning of the match," Lea Cizeron said. "Dash, our grad assistant, told me to focus on my forehand and keep working through it."

Visic improved to 7-2 on the season with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 3 and Gray, playing just her third singles match of the season, rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 win.

"I saw contributions up and down the lineup this morning," Linn said. "The women played well."
