DENTON, Texas - Hannah Reynolds fell a rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 19 points and nine boards but Midwestern State could not get the defensive stops they were looking for down the stretch in a 68-59 Lone Star Conference loss to Texas Woman's on Saturday afternoon inside Kitty Magee Arena.
"The kids played hard," Midwestern State assistant coach
Christopher Reay said. "I am extremely proud of them. I feel bad for them. We were within striking distance. It's a game of runs and limiting mistakes, but some of the ones we made were at costly moments. This one hurts."
The Mustangs and Pioneers traded baskets in the first half, with neither team leading by more than five points. Macy Wilkerson sunk two free throws with 0.7 seconds remaining in the second quarter to hand the Pioneers a 31-26 lead. Wilkerson, who entered the day averaging 5.8 points per game, finished with a team-high 18.
Texas Woman's pushed their lead to eight at 41-33 with 1:54 remaining in the third quarter before the Mustangs used a 6-2 spurt to enter the fourth down by just four.
Sheridan Bostic's three-pointer in the opening seconds of the fourth pulled Midwestern State to within one at 43-42. It was one of three separate occasions in the final frame the Mustangs trailed by one. Each time, the Pioneers scored on their next trip down the floor, none bigger than when Sadie Moyer connected from deep to push the lead to four with 4:29 remaining.
Reynolds, who has scored in double figures in three straight games, answered with a jumper. TWU followed with an 8-0 surge to put the game out of reach.
Mica Schneider drilled three triples on the way to 14 points while freshman
Mandy Withey set a new career-high with 10 points.
The Mustangs dropped to 8-12 (6-10) while TWU improved to 7-13 (5-11).
