Mustangs fall to Texas A&M-Commerce despite career night from Schneider

Senior scores 31 points, MSU Texas pushes No. 3 Lions in 92-77 loss

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Mica Schneider hit her first three point attempt. Then her second. The senior was just getting started. Schneider hit her first four triples on the way to a career-high 31 points in a 92-77 loss to No. 3 Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

"I just had some fire in me," Schneider said. "It's pretty big motivation coming in against the number three team in the country. The spotlight of bringing them down probably would have meant a lot to this program and Coach J. I gave it my all."

Schneider scored 20 points in the first half and finished the night 7-of-11 from the floor. The Boerne, Texas native set a new career-high with seven three-pointers.

"Mica is an incredible player," interim head coach Christopher Reay said. "Once she sees one go in and plays relaxed, you know, she can do great things."

The Mustangs trailed unbeaten Texas A&M-Commerce by 13 points at the half before a furious second half rally.

A 12-4 run late in the third quarter trimmed a 13-point deficit to five at 60-55 before the Lions rattled off four of the next six points to hold a 64-57 edge after three.

MSU Texas again cut the deficit to five in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. TAMUC responded with an 11-5 run and never led by less than 10 the rest of the way.

"Very pleased with the effort tonight," Reay said. "I told them after the game if we can replicate that on Saturday against UT Tyler, I think we are going to have a great result."

Elizabeth Cathcart scored 16 points for the Mustangs to reach double figures for the 17th time this season while Mandy Withey tied a career-high with six rebounds.

Alexis Bryant scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to collect her fifth double-double of the season for the Lions. Maddison Glass added 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

The Mustangs continue their four game homestand on Saturday against UT Tyler. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
