SILVER CITY, N.M. - Lauren Lindgren recorded her seventh multi-hit game of the season and knocked in two runs, but Western New Mexico erased an early 3-0 deficit and then held on late to hand Midwestern State a 7-6 loss on Friday afternoon in game one of a twin bill at the WNMU Softball Field.
Lindgren jumpstarted Midwestern State's offense in the top of the first, lining a two-run double to left center before scoring on a wild pitch. The senior finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI.
After scoring a run in the bottom of the first, Western New Mexico took their first lead of the contest with a three-run second inning. Samantha Corral drove in two with a double to even the score. Two batters later, Alicia Habitzreuther's RBI single pushed WNMU in front, 4-3.Â
MSU Texas tied the game at 4-4 in the third when
Carson Solis reached on a fielder's choice. Solis finished 0-for-2 with two walks and an RBI, but saw her season best eight-game hitting streak snapped.
Western New Mexico broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth on an error, then scored twice more in the fifth to push the lead to 7-4.
The Maroon and Gold plated two unearned runs in the sixth but
Bailey Brenek struck out looking with the tying run on second to end the inning.
In the seventh, MSU Texas threatened, putting runners at first and second with one out before Jalyn McClain retired
Caycee Griffin and
Brooke Taylor to end the game. McClain (4-3) went the distance for WNMU.Â
Jacey Henry (1-6) took the loss.The right-hander allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits. Henry walked three and struck out five.
