SILVER CITY, N.M. - Western New Mexico erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back in a 16-2 five inning run rule victory over visiting Midwestern State on Friday afternoon at the WNMU Softball Field. The win completed a doubleheader sweep for WNMU.
After Midwestern State's
Bailey Brenek ripped a two-run single in the top of the first, Western New Mexico sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame. Alicia Habitzreuther's two-run home run highlighted the eight-run frame.
WNMU used the long ball again in the second. Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez drilled a solo blast and later in the inning, Nikki Medina connected for a three run shot to push the lead to 12-2.
Aliehs Ortiz's blast in the third, the Mustangs' fourth long ball of the game, gave Western New Mexico a 13-2 advantage. They added two more runs in the fourth.
Midwestern State's
Lauren Lindgren and
Ashley Turner joined Brenek in recording hits.
Mattye Tyler (0-6) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (six earned) in 1/3 of an inning.
