CANYON, Texas -- Midwestern State had a rough go of it Thursday night at the First United Bank Center.
The Mustangs were ice cold shooting shooting a season low 18.3 percent, while producing their lowest scoring output of the campaign in a 66-34 loss to No. 24 West Texas A&M.
"It was one of those nights," MSU interim coach
Christopher Reay said. "We've been playing with so much raw emotion over the last few weeks. We played very tight. The looks were there, but it was one of those nights where the ball didn't go in the hole."
Senior
Mica Schneider, who scored double digits in her last five games and had 20-or-more points in four of her last seven games, and redshirt-freshman
Frances King, who had a career-high 23 points Saturday against Oklahoma Christian, did not score and were a combined 1-of-16 from the floor.
Meanwhile, junior forward
Hannah Reynolds managed 1-of-10 shooting to finish with two points and eight rebounds.
No Midwestern State player landed in double figures as the Mustangs were paced by sophomore forward
Shawnisay Millar, who scored five of her seven points at the charity stripe. Senior
Elizabeth Cathcart and junior
Kityana Diaz had six points each.
Defensively, MSU held West Texas A&M to a 41.3-percent shooting night, but the Lady Buffs connected on 23-of-34 free throws to pull away from the Mustangs.
"Our defense was fine," Reay said. "We knew the plays were coming and the girls did a great job of reading and reacting to their screening action. We were able to get stops, but couldn't score. It was frustrating."
Despite the loss, Midwestern State qualified for the Lone Star Conference Postsesason Tournament for the third straight year and for the eighth time in the last nine seasons with the help of losses by Oklahoma Christian, Texas A&M International and UT Permian Basin. The trio of teams remains two games behind the Mustangs with one game to play.
MSU can moved to the No. 10 seed with a win in the season finale of Eastern New Mexico and if Arkansas-Fort Smith falls to league leading Texas A&M-Commerce.
Midwestern State closes the regular season Saturday afternoon against Eastern New Mexico at Greyhound Arena. Tip off is set for 3 p.m. (Central Time).
