Mustangs knock off No. 22 Rogers State, 5-4

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Midwestern State earned their first win over a top 25 team in nearly two years, slipping past No. 22 Rogers State (Okla.), 5-4, on Friday afternoon at Tom Heath Field at Lawson Plaza.

Kathryn Wells (1-2) tossed four innings of relief to earn the win and the Mustangs took advantage of four RSU errors.

MSU Texas struck for two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. With runners on second and third and one out, Bailey Brenek reached on an error that allowed a run to score. The Mustangs then executed a double steal, with Brenek stealing second and Ashley Turner stealing home to make it 2-0.

The Mustangs added a run in the third on a Bailey Wamsley RBI groundout.

Rogers State finally broke through against Wells in the sixth, plating two runs on three hits to cut the deficit to 3-2. Hayley Womack and Kimberli Presnell drove in runs for the Hillcats.

Midwestern State answered with a two spot of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Marley Eller opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Brooke Taylor and Carson Solis followed with run scoring hits to give the Mustangs a 5-2 lead.

RSU made things interesting in the seventh. The Hillcats pushed across two runs and had the tying and go-ahead runners on base before Jacey Henry struck out Sabrina Anguiano to earn her first save of the season.

Mattye Tyler started for the Mustangs and pitched two scoreless innings before giving way to Wells.

The Mustangs continue play at the Edmond Regional Festival III at 4 p.m. against Central Oklahoma.
