WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Mustangs finish off play at the MSU Texas Invitational on Sunday afternoon against Regis (Colo.). First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Jacey Henry tossed a five inning shutout and Midwestern State scored early and often in an 8-0 five inning run rule victory over the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs on Saturday night at Mustangs Park as part of the MSU Texas Invitational. MSU Texas raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first.
Bailey Wamsley singled to open the frame and after
Ashley Turner popped to second, the next four Mustangs reached base safely.
Lauren Lindgren walked ahead of
Bailey Brenek's run scoring single. Henry was hit by a pitch to load the bases and
Kelsey Eropkin reached on an error to make it 2-0.
Marley Eller followed with a run scoring groundout. The Mustangs added a run in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Henry then worked out of the trouble in the top of the fourth, collecting a strikeout and snaring a lineout with the bases loaded to keep the Bulldogs off the board.
Lauren Lindgren's RBI double in the bottom of the inning pushed the lead to 5-0. The outfielder has driven in runs in three straight games and four of five. A three-run bottom of the fifth capped off the Mustangs' first win of the season. With runners at second and third and two out, Wamsley smacked a two-run single up the middle before Turner ended the game with a run scoring single to right.
SERIES HISTORY
Regis (Colo.) has won each of the first three meetings from Midwestern State, outscoring the Mustangs 28-20. When the two teams square off on Saturday, it will mark the first time since 2016. The Rangers, who were ranked No. 21 in the country at the time, pulled out a 9-8 win.
HENRY HURLS A GEM
Jacey Henry earned her first win of the season on Saturday, tossing a five hit shutout against Southwestern Oklahoma State. The right-hander navigatied a Bulldogs lineup that had scored 19 runs in their previous three games. Henry, in her first season with MSU Texas after transferring from East Central (Okla.), featured a steady diet of drop balls to keep the visitors off balance.
LINDGREN'S LIGHTING IT UP
Lauren Lindgren pushed her RBI streak to three games with a fourth inning double on Saturday night. The senior leads the Mustangs with eight RBI and is hitting a team high .455.
SCOUTING THE RANGERS
Regis (Colo.) is 1-1 so far at the MSU Texas Invitational. The Rangers opened play with a 10-5 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State before suffering a 10-4 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State. Shayelyn Allen is 3-for-7 in Wichita Falls with a double and an RBI while Carly Beard has knocked in four runs in the first two games. The Rangers will square off with Cameron (Okla.) at 11 a.m. before playing the Mustangs at 1 p.m.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH RYAL
Mark Ryal begins his fourth season as head coach after serving in an interim capacity in 2017. Last season, Ryal guided the Mustangs to a 22-19 (13-17) record. The 22 wins marked the program's highest total since the 2016 season. Overall, the Dewar, Oklahoma native has compiled a 57-78 (32-58) record during his time in Wichita Falls.
