Mustangs tame Tigers, 6-1

MSU Texas now 3-1 on season

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State opened a stretch of three matches in three days with a resounding 6-1 win over Cowley County Community College on Thursday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs collected the doubles point and never looked back, rattling off wins in five of six singles matches to win for the third time in four matches.

"Great job all day adjusting to different strategies by opponents," MSU Texas head coach Scott Linn said. "This was a solid team win."

The duo of Juliette Mary/Emilija Segetlija blanked Courtenay Leonard/Arianna Lumanog 6-0 to inch closer to clinching the doubles point. Casie Curry/Lea Cizeron secured the point and gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with a 6-1 decision against Takalani Molaoa/Valentina Rodriguez.

After the Tigers evened the match at 1-1 with a win in No. 1 singles, the Mustangs went to work, winning five straight matches.

Lea Cizeron got the ball rolling with a hard fought 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2. Ashley Ramirez followed suit, grinding out a three-set win on the number three line 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to hand the Mustangs a 3-1 advantage.

At No. 4, Emilija Visic also went to three sets, before downing Takalani Molaoa 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

"Lea Cizeron picked up a good win at No. 2," Linn said. "Ashley Ramirez and Emilija Visic finished strong while Juliette Mary showed excellent patience. And great body language by Emilija Segetlija."

Juliette Mary and Emilija Segetlija each earned straight set wins to finish off the match.
