GULF SHORES, Ala. – Midwestern State (0-1) opened the 2020 season with a 4-2 loss to West Alabama (2-0) on Saturday afternoon at the Gulf Shores Invitational.
West Alabama broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the third with a three-run frame. With runners at first and third and one out, Hayes Fulford singled to center to push the Tigers in front, 1-0. Fulford then stole second and scored on a Kylie Martin groundout. UWA added an unearned run later in the inning to take a 3-0 lead.
MSU Texas scored their first runs of the season in the sixth on RBI singles from
Bailey Wamsley and
Ashley Turner. Turner finished 2-for-4.
The Tigers tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Jacey Henry (0-1) went the distance for MSU Texas, surrendering four runs (three earned) in six innings to suffer the loss. The right-hander yielded 11 hits. She walked one and struck out one.
Kelsey Eropkin went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
All nine of the Mustangs' hits were singles. MSU Texas committed five errors.
Midwestern State takes the field tonight at 5:45 p.m. against Mississippi College.
