Cold second half dooms Midwestern State in loss at UAFS

Diaz scores 13 points in LSC setback

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Midwestern State went 10:43 without a field goal in the second half of an 80-60 loss to Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday afternoon inside the Stubblefield Center.

After Shawnisay Millar's layup with 7:20 remaining in the third quarter gave the Mustangs a 41-40 edge, MSU Texas did not score another shot from the floor until Frances King made a layup and was fouled with 6:37 remaining in the fourth.

During the stretch, MSU Texas converted 10 free throws but went 0-of-7 from the floor and committed eight turnovers. By the time King's layup went through the hoop, the Maroon and Gold trailed 63-53.

"It was a tale of two halves," MSU Texas Head Coach Noel Johnson said. "I thought we did a good job of executing the game plan in the first half. Then in the second half, we started getting into a running game and turned it over 16 times."

Midwestern State (7-9, 5-7) finished with 25 turnovers. The Mustangs led by as much as six points in the first half but went into the locker room deadlocked at 32-32 with the Lions (9-10, 6-7).

Kityana Diaz scored a team-high 13 points, the third time in the last five games the junior has reached double figures. Diaz added six steals. Frances King tied a career-high with 12 points while Mica Schneider and Shawnisay Millar each scored 10 points.

"We put together two great games last week and then we come and we don't play two good games this week." Johnson said. "We can't do that and make the conference tournament in this league."

Freshman Hannah Boyett scored a career-high 26 points for the Lions. The Muldrow, Oklahoma native finished 8-of-16 from the floor and knocked in six triples.

The Mustangs return home to D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night for a Lone Star Conference clash against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
