Cathcart, Schneider team up to lift Mustangs to Red River Rivalry win

Seniors combine for 45 points in 84-77 victory

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - After three straight losses, the Midwestern State Women's Basketball team had stopped having fun. Turns out a couple of days of rest and a team bowling trip were all the Mustangs needed to return to their winning ways in a come-from-behind 84-77 win over rival Cameron on Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

"We talked about having more fun this week and we did a little team activity," MSU Texas Head Coach Noel Johnson said. "I think it was good to be together and I think that helped a little bit."

Down 44-32 at the break, the Mustangs relied on the experience of seniors Elizabeth Cathcart and Mica Schneider. Cathcart scored 13 of her career-high 23 points in the second half while Schneider scored 11 of her career-high 22 points over the final 20 minutes of play.

"I have been trying to tell myself to get an easy bucket first to spark my outside shooting," Mica Schneider said. "I got that easy floater at the start of the game and I just knew it was going to be that kind of night."

The Mustangs used a 14-2 run to close the third quarter and tied the game at 56-56 when Schneider hit three free throws after being fouled on a top of the key attempt.

"They are experienced," Johnson said. "It is time to put the ball in their hands and let them go and figure out a way to get it done. They did that today."

Leading 68-67 with just under four minutes left in the fourth, Kityana Diaz sparked a 6-0 Mustangs run with a three-pointer to push the lead to seven. Cameron would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.

Maighan Hedge led all players with 28 points. The sophomore shot 8-of-14 from the floor and connected on all 11 of her free throw attempts. Ava Battese chipped in with 15 points.
