WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Jessica Barbosa snatched a school record 21 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards, and Soteria Banks scored 18 points to lift visiting St. Mary's (Texas) to a 72-51 Lone Star Conference win over Midwestern State on Saturday afternoon at D.L Ligon Coliseum.
Barbosa's career-high in rebounds helped the Rattlers to 21 second chance points. The redshirt junior added eight points and six steals.
"We struggled to block her (Barbosa) out today," MSU Head Coach
Noel Johnson said. "She was a force."
Midwestern State led 9-7 midway through the first quarter when
Hannah Reynolds hit a three-pointer from the top of the key. St. Mary's responded with a 5-0 run, fueled in large part by back-to-back MSU turnovers. The Mustangs finished with 22 turnovers on the afternoon and trailed 16-15 after the first quarter.
MSU Texas was held to a season low five points in the second quarter. St. Mary's used an 18-point frame to take a 34-20 lead into the break.
"They fronted us in the post in that second quarter and we kept turning it over," Johnson said. "Our defense is really suffering because of our lack of offense."
The Mustangs trailed by double digits throughout the second half despite a strong showing from
Kityana Diaz. The junior finished with a season-high 13 points, including nine in the second half. Diaz shot 4-of-7 from the floor.
Reynolds finished with 11 points and a season best five blocks.
Courtney Kerr knocked home two three-pointers on her way to a season-high eight points.
Briley Perkins went 3-of-5 from deep to finish with 13 points for St. Mary's.
