SANTE FE, New Mexico –
Kelly Cannistra found the back of the net in the 97th minute to propel Midwestern State past New Mexico Highlands, 3-2 in overtime, in the season opener for both squads.
"They got a win, somewhere that was tough to play," MSU coach
Ryan Spence said. They battled through some adversity, including high altitude and transportation problems and came away with a win."
Nicole Marsolek open the scoring for Midwestern State (1-0-0), converting a perfect through ball from Cannistra.
Sarah Stewart also recorded an assist on the play for MSU.
Less than three minutes later, New Mexico Highlands (0-1-0) evened the score on an Aly Loidiolt tally.
Still tied 1-1 in the 51st minute,
Sara Machado found the back of the net on a brilliant feed from
Imani Morlock. Janis Martinez tied the game at two with a strike in the 72nd minute.
