Mustangs register second-straight sweep to close road trip

THE RUNDOWN
SILVER CITY, N.M. – After stringing together a 7-0 sweep against UT Permian Basin yesterday, No. 34-ranked Midwestern State picked up right where it left off. The Mustangs rolled up nine wins on Saturday at Western New Mexico for the team's second-straight 7-0 win.
 
The Mustangs improved to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in LSC play while WNMU drops to 7-13 overall and 1-5 in LSC action.
 
The Maroon and Gold raced out to an early lead with a clean sweep in doubles.
 
The duo of Greta Lazzarotto and Casie Curry opened the day with their fourth-straight win, trumping Carolina Torrico and Nicold Gonzalez, 6-2, at the No. 2 line.
 
MSU Texas' tandem of Ashley Ramirez and Bianca Duff clinched the point against Julia Tozzi and Camila Gomez, 6-3, at the No. 1 line.
 
Lea Cizeron and Juliette Mary completed the sweep, downing Karina Diaz-Kolovos and Julia Terrazas, 6-4, at the No. 3 flight.
 
MSU maintained the early momentum and rattled off straight-set wins on all six singles courts.
 
Mary and Curry collected back-to-back wins at the Nos. 5 & 6 flights to stretch the lead to 3-0. Mary ousted Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-1, before Curry toppled Terrazas, 6-1, 6-2.
 
Lazzarotto clinched the win for the Mustangs, besting Diaz-Kolovos, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3. With two wins today, the Italian is now three combined wins away from breaking Lacey Wuthrich's all-time record of 138.
 
Duff, Cizeron and Ramirez closed out the match with wins for the Mustangs.
 
Duff defeated Tozzi, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1, while Cizeron took a 6-4, 6-1 decision from Gomez at No. 2. Ramirez finished off the sweep, downing Torrico, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4.
