THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas– Senior
Greta Lazzarotto move to the top of the Midwestern State all-time wins chart and junior
Bianca Duff collected her 100th-career victory as the No. 35-ranked Mustangs rolled 34th-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville, 5-2, Sunday at the MSU Tennis Center.
MSU improves to 13-5 on the season and 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play while the Javlinas drop to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in league action.
Two weeks after setting the program's career doubles wins record, Lazzarotto passed Lacey Wuthrich on Sunday with her 139th career combined victory. The Bassano del Grappa, Italy, native improved to 139-52 in her four-year stint, including a 55-36 record in singles and 84-16 mark in doubles.
Partnered with freshman
Casie Curry, Lazzarotto clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 winner against Phoephathep Philavong and Victoria Romanovskaia at the No. 2 line to match the career mark. The senior cruised to an easy decision, 6-1, 6-3, against Philavong in singles to extend the MSU lead to 3-0.
Duff became the 12th player to join the 100 win club at MSU Texas in dramatic fashion, clinching the decisive victory – and the match – for the Maroon and Gold. The Australian improves to 100-37 in her three-year career with the Mustangs, going 42-23 in singles and 58-14 in doubles.
Duff paired off with
Ashley Ramirez, topping Lisa Carvaljal and Maya Donkor, 6-4, at the No. 1 doubles flight for her 99th career win. The junior needed a heroic comeback in singles to achieve the mark.
Trailing Carvajal 4-1 in the third set, Duff stormed back, winning five of the last six games for the milestone win, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 7-5, at the No. 1 line.
Curry got the Mustangs out on the right foot in singles play. The Wichita Falls native moved to 11-1 overall and 7-0 at the No. 6 flight with a straight-sets victory over Rauer, 6-4, 6-2, to extend the MSU Texas lead to 2-0.
Junior
Lea Cizeron erased a first-set deficit in singles, topping Laura Montalvo at the No. 3 line, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
Ramirez and junior
Juliette Mary suffered the lone singles setback for the Maroon and Gold. Mary forced a third-set with a 7-4 win in a tiebreaker before eventually falling, 6-2, while Ramirez grabbed a first-set tiebreaker against Romanovskaia, 7-3, prior to dropping back-to-back 6-4 sets to close the match.
