Mustangs survive Oklahoma Baptist for program’s 500th win

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Junior Juliette Mary outlasted Madeleine Boepple in a second-set tiebreaker to secure the 500th win in program history for Midwestern State. The Mustangs survived a singles' scare from the Bison, 4-3, for the milestone win and improve to 14-5 on the year.

Mary polished off the win with four aces in the tiebreaker. The Perpignan, France, native grabbed a 5-0 lead before surrendering five-straight points to Boepple to even the breaker. After breaking serve to move ahead 6-5, the junior capped the win with an ace to improve to 12-3 on the year.

MSU grabbed an early lead by winning the doubles competition for the fifth-straight match. Since the April 4 loss to Angelo State, the Maroon and Gold have won 14 of the last 15 doubles matches over the last five contests.

The tandem of Greta Lazzarotto and Casie Curry downed Alex Bowers and Boepple, 6-1, at the No. 2 flight to start the day before Ashley Ramirez and Bianca Duff topped Ethne Dowling and Kim Moosbacher, 6-1, at No. 1.

The Mustangs completed the sweep as Lea Cizeron and Mary ousted Stefy Varon and Tahlia Walsh, 6-1, at No. 3.

The Bison quickly turned the momentum in singles, winning the first three courts off to take a 3-1 lead.

Duff fell to 12th-ranked Moosbacher, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 1 line and Lazzarotto suffered a 6-4, 6-4 setback at No. 2 to Dowling. Bowers won a pair of back-and-forth sets with Ramirez to stretch the lead to 3-1, 7-6 (3), 7-5, at the No. 4 line.

The tide slowly shifted back in favor of the Maroon and Gold as the Mustangs began to pick up wins.

Cizeron bested Walsh, 7-5, 7-5, to trim the deficit to 3-2 while Curry logged her fifth-straight win, sweeping Jacquelina Charvat, 6-3, 6-0, to pull MSU even.

With the match tied 3-3, Mary clinched the win in the last match standing. The junior rifled four aces in the tiebreaker to beat Boepple, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
