THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Held hitless through the first six innings, Midwestern State broke up Abrie Castillo's no-hitter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh before stunning UT Permian Basin with three, two-out runs to steal the opener, 3-2.
The Mustangs blasted the shell-shocked Falcons in the series finale – 8-0 – plating six runs in the first inning to put the game away early. All 11 runs on the day came with two outs.
MSU completed the sweep of UTPB to improve to 19-16 overall and 10-14 in Lone Star Conference action.
GAME ONE
The Maroon and Gold needed a wild-finish to cap an improbable comeback in the day's opener. With two outs and the go-ahead run on first, the Mustangs dreams of a comeback appeared dashed as sophomore
Marley Eller lifted a routine fly ball to center.
Those dreams turned into a nightmare for UTPB as the ball bounced out of Alyssa Lopez's glove before falling to the turf. With Eller reaching safely, junior
Kelsey Eropkin scored the tying run from second as freshman
Bailey Wamsley motored home from first, crossing the plate ahead of the throw to give MSU Texas its first true walk-off win since 2016.
After a pair of quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, senior
Carli Woolsey worked a six-pitch walk to extend the contest. Eropkin followed with a free-pass of her own to put the tying run aboard.
Wamsley snapped a 0-for-20 stretch by the Maroon and Gold with a RBI single to left off Abrie Castillo to break up the no-hit bid. The Guthrie, Okla., product tomahawked a single into left to score Woolsey from second and put the Mustangs on the board before coming around to score the game-winning run.
Senior
Abbie Lancaster worked out of trouble continuously to keep the Falcons off the board through the first six frames. The right-hander stranded 10 runners on-base, including pitching her way out of a bases-loaded, no out jam in the third. The Idabel, Okla., native improved to 9-5 with nine strikeouts.
With both pitchers putting up zeroes on the scoreboard, UTPB eventually broke the scoring seal with two outs in the top of the seventh. Alicia Marion led off the frame with a single and moved into scoring position on an errant throw. A groundout moved the UTPB right fielder up to third with one out. Jessica Gonzalez was hit by Lancaster's 1-2 offering and promptly stole second.
After a strikeout, Vanessa Alonzo lined a 2-0 pitch to center to stake the Falcons a 2-0 lead before the Mustangs made their improbable comeback.
Castillo was tagged with the loss for UTPB to drop to 1-11 on the season, allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit with a pair of walks and six strikeouts.
