Mustangs bounce back with sweep of UAFS

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State rebounded from a 4-3 loss yesterday to No. 32 St. Edward's with a dominant 7-0 win against Arkansas-Fort Smith on a windy Saturday morning at the MSU Tennis Center.
 
The 18th-ranked Mustangs climb to 11-3 overall before beginning Lone Star Conference play next week.
 
MSU moved to 10-1 when winning the doubles point and a perfect 6-0 when completing the doubles sweep.
 
Senior Dillon Pineda secured his 98th career win to open the doubles competition. The Allen product paired off with Nolan McCaig for a swift 6-0 win over Brady Kenyon and Luke Anderson at the No. 2 flight.
 
The Maroon and Gold's fifth-ranked tandem of Ben Westwick and Alberto Diaz cruised past Daniel Borrero and Wian Van Dyk, 6-1, at No. 1 to clinch the point.
 
Angel Palacios and Denney Norrie completed the sweep, downing Zach Delmonico and Andrew Anderson, 6-4, at No. 3.
 
The Mustangs refused to let up in singles, rattling off straight-set wins on all six courts.
 
Diaz stretched the Maroon and Gold's lead to 2-0 as the 71st-ranked singles player topped Kenyon, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 4 line.
 
McCaig torched Van Dyk, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 line to expand the lead to 3-0 and pick up his 49th career win.
 
No. 71 Alex Martinez Roca defeated Kneyon, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 line to lock up the win.
 
A day after failing to clinch the match, second-ranked Angel Palacios returned to form, rolling Borrero, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1, to extend the lead to 5-0.
 
Jean Muniz remained unbeaten with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Ethan Eddleman at the No. 5 flight. The Brasilia, Brazil, native improved to 3-0 in singles.
 
Westwick completed the sweep with an easy 6-2, 6-1 win against Delmonico at No. 6.
