Pineda gets win No. 100 as Mustangs down UTPB to open LSC action

THE RUNDOWN
ODESSA, Texas – Senior Dillon Pineda recorded his 100th career win at Midwestern State as the No. 16-ranked Mustangs clipped UT Permian Basin, 6-1, to start Lone Star Conference play.

The Allen native became the 12th member of the MSU Texas 100 win club. Pineda improved to 42-32 in singles and 58-32 in doubles during his four-year tenure.

After losing the doubles competition, the Maroon and Gold responded with a commanding performance in singles. The Mustangs claimed first set wins on all six courts and wasted no time in putting the match away.

Pineda got the ball rolling with his milestone win at the No. 2 line. The senior toppled Marcos Silva, 6-3, 6-0, to even the match at 1-1.

Junior Angel Palacios followed with a sweep of 52nd-ranked Raul Stevens, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 1 flight. The nation's No. 2 ranked singles player bolstered his record to 7-1 against ranked foes the year.

Sophomore Nolan McCaig stretched the lead to 3-1, downing Juan Diego Ruiz, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 4 flight. The Modesto, Calif., native grabbed his 25th singles win and 50th career win against the Falcons.

Sophomore Alex Martinez Roca locked up the win with a back-and-forth 6-4, 7-6 victory over Enrique Sanchez at the No. 3 line.

Sophomore Alberto Diaz blanked Jordan Minjoot in a super-set tiebreaker to keep the Mustangs unblemished in singles.

Freshman Ben Westwick completed the singles sweep, downing Jorge Garcia, 6-1, 7-6 (3), at the No. 6 flight.
