Lazzarotto matches career doubles record with 78th win

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Senior Greta Lazzarotto matched Brooke Gray (2000-03) for the all-time lead with her 78th career doubles win on Sunday at the MSU Tennis Center. Despite the historic occasion, Midwestern State fell to No. 32-ranked Northwest Missouri State, 5-2.
 
After the doubles point had been decided, Lazzarotto and partner Bianca Duff triumphed over NWMSU's Julie Rinderknech and Julie Aliseda, 7-5, at the No. 2 flight. The Bassano del Grappa, Italy, native owns a 78-15 record in doubles and is 11 wins away from breaking Lacey Wuthrich's program record of 138 combined wins.
 
The Bearcats took the early advantage with a big upset at the No. 1 flight. Tania Teruel and Marta Ferrando upset the 10th-ranked pair of Maddy Coffman and Ashley Ramirez, 6-1, to open the contest.
 
The Maroon and Gold lost the point at the No. 3 line as Lea Cizeron and Juliette Mary fell to Irene Recuenco and Sara Grozdanovic, 6-2.
 
MSU Texas unable to turn the momentum in singles en-route to the setback.
 
Duff fell in straight-sets to Ferrando, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 flight while Cizeron was unable to pull off the upset against 33rd-ranked Recuenco, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2, allowing the Bearcats to push the lead to 3-0.
 
Coffman got the Mustangs on the board. The nation's 13th-ranked singles player topped Tania Teruel, 7-6 (2), 6-2 for the Maroon and Gold's first singles victory.
 
After making history in doubles, Lazzarotto failed to hold on to a first-set lead before dropping the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-2, to 75th-ranked Aliseda, clinching the match for NWMSU, 4-1.
 
Curry lost her first singles match of the spring, falling to Rinderknech at the No. 5 flight, 6-3, 6-1.
 
Mary closed out the match with a 7-6 (3), 6-3, win over Tess Lovig at the No. 6 flight.
