THE RUNDOWN
BOLIVAR, Mo. – After inexplicably dropping 19 spots to No. 33 in this week's Oracle/ITA national team rankings, Midwestern State continued to prove the poll wrong on Saturday. A day after knocking off the nation's No. 2 junior college, the Mustangs fell to 17th-ranked Southwest Baptist on the road, 4-3, to close its three-day roadtrip with a 3-0 record.
The Mustangs needed a comeback effort for the second-straight day after dropping the doubles competition for the fifth-straight match.
MSU Texas opened the day with a sweep from the duo of
Lea Cizeron and
Juliette Mary – 6-0 – at the No. 3 line against Sarah Brown and Emma Davis.
The early high was quickly lost as the Bearcats pulled a pair of upsets at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles flights to grab the 1-0 edge. The 42nd-ranked tandem of
Bianca Duff and
Greta Lazzarotto dropped a 6-2 affair to Constanca Crespo and Diana Cabrera at No. 2 before 13
th-ranked Jill Van Den Dungen and Klara Vickov bested the No. 10 pair of
Maddy Coffman and
Ashley Ramirez, 6-4, at the No. 1 line.
The Mustangs fell further behind early in singles.
At the No. 2 flight, 35th-ranked Crespo stole a first-set tiebreaker against Cizeron, 7-1, before blanking the MSU Texas junior in the second set, 6-0, to extend SBU's lead to 2-0.
For the second-straight day, freshman
Casie Curry got the comeback started for the Maroon and Gold to remain unbeaten on the spring. The Wichita Falls native topped 62nd-ranked Vickov in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, to put the Mustangs on the board, down 2-1.
In a top 20 showdown at the No. 1 line, 13th-ranked Coffman fought off 19th-ranked Van Den Dungen, 7-5, 7-6 (3), to even the match. The Flower Mound native secured her fourth win against a nationally ranked opponent.
Sophomore
Taylor Gray made her spring debut and did so in dominant fashion. The Wichita Falls native rolled Davis in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 to give MSU Texas its first lead of the day.
The Bearcats pulled even at the No. 5 line as Ramirez fell to Brown, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
For the second-straight day, the match fell to Mary as the last court standing. The Perpignan, France, native upended 66
th-ranked Cabrera, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, to secure the win for the Mustangs.
