IRVING, Texas -- Midwestern State senior quarterback Layton Rabb earned National Football Foundation (NFF) scholar-athlete honors by the Gridiron Club of Dallas Monday afternoon.
 
The Llano, Texas native stands amongst the eight Texas collegiate and 74 North Texas high school scholar-athletes to be honored during the chapter's 11th annual awards banquet on Sunday, March 24 at the Dallas/Addison Marriott Quorum by the Galleria.
 
Rabb, a two-time nominee for the Harlon Hill Trophy, earned second-team All-America honors from the American Football Coaches of America passing for 3,114 yards on 214-of-369 passing with 29 touchdowns and six interceptions as a senior.
 
The 2019 J.W. Rollins/Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Year ranked fifth in NCAA Division II in total offense (325.3 yards per game), eighth in passing touchdowns (29) and fourth in passing yards per game (311.4).
 
Rabb posted a career 18-3 mark as a starter for the Mustangs finishing as the program's No. 2 all-time leading passer with 6,399 yards. He was the first quarterback in school history to post two 3,000-yard campaigns.
 
The accounting graduate earned Google Cloud Academic All-America accolades in the fall, was a two-time LSC All-Academic team member and gained LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll status for seven semesters.
 
Rabb led the Mustangs to their first NCAA Division II playoff win since 2006 as a junior. The Mustangs were a playoff snub in 2018 despite dropping two games by a single point to playoff-bound programs.
 
"We are incredibly proud of this year's scholar-athletes," said Gerald Brence, president of the NFF Gridiron Club of Dallas Chapter and athletics director for the Plano Independent School District. "In the 11th year of our chapter, we are honoring another great group of high school scholar-athletes who continue to impress, not only on the field competitively but also as scholars and young community leaders. It's always an honor to meet these young men, showcasing the great stories in North Texas that will inspire future student-athletes to excel in the classroom and become more involved in their communities."
 
Selected from a pool of candidates covering the entire region, the eight collegiate and 74 high school players earned NFF chapter scholar-athlete recognition in 2019 after a rigorous review.
 
The selection committee comprised of coaches, teachers, administrators and business leaders from North Texas evaluated the candidates based on their academic accomplishments, academic performance and leadership in the community.
 
Past Midwestern State honorees include Jacob Sherrill in 2018, Akoakoa Paleka-Kennedy in 2017, Case Winkler in 2015, Chase Hooper in 2013, Zack Eskridge in 2011, Lance Calloway in 2010, Daniel Polk in 2009 and the late Tony Burson in 2008.
