Mustangs fight back before falling 4-3 to No. 8 West Florida

SAN ANTONIO -- No. 14 Midwestern State displayed resilience rallying from three down before succumbing to No. 8-ranked West Florida 4-3 Saturday at the Anne-Marie Tennis Center.

The Argonauts (6-5) claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two positions, then put the Mustangs on the brink with successive victories at Nos. 1 and 2 singles.

Berta Bonardi, the nation's top-ranked singles player, defeated Maddy Coffman 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, while No. 29-ranked Karolina Silwanowicz beat Bianca Duff 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to push the UWF edge to 3-0.

But it was far from over as senior Greta Lazzarotto set the tone by claiming her 50th career singles win with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over Valeria Mantilla on the No. 4 line. The Italian improved to a perfect 7-0 this season.

Freshman Casie Curry edged the Mustangs closer with a straight-set -- 6-2, 7-6 (2) -- win on the No. 6 line. The Wichitan has provided a spark for MSU the past two weeks by winning her first four collegiate singles matches.

Junior Lea Cizeron battled back after dropping the first set 1-6 at No. 3, then beat UWF's Gabriela Araujo 7-5, 6-4 to even the match at 3-all.

Junior Juliette Mary split sets at No. 5 going 6-3, 2-6 before West Florida's Dianna Vlad clinched with a close 7-5 victory allowing the Argonauts to escape and improve to 6-5 on the season.
