THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Senior
Misty Muniz tossed Midwestern State's first shutout since the 2017 season and went 2-for-3 at the plate with five RBI, including a grand slam, as the Mustangs blanked Cameron 9-0 Saturday night at Mustangs Park.
MSU Texas won the series against the Aggies for the second-straight season to improve to 9-6 on the season and 2-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
Muniz saw her no-hit bid broken up with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. On a 1-2 count, Cameron's Kaylyn Smith legged out a single on a ground ball to shortstop for the Aggies only hit of the night. The right-hander fanned Brenna Busby to close out the contest.
The Seabrook native matched a career-high with seven strikeouts and did not issue a walk to improve to 3-2.
Leading 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Mustangs broke the game open with a six spot and clubbing seven hits. Senior
Tucker Caraway opened the inning with a single to center before being replaced by junior
Kelsey Eropkin on a fielder's choice. Junior
Lauren Lindgren and freshman
Bailey Wamsley poked back-to-back singles through the infield to load the bags.
Muniz blasted Turner Whorton's full-count offering to straightaway center field to clear the bases and cushion her lead to 7-0.
After an infield single from senior
Carli Woolsey, sophomore
Caycee Griffin roped a double into the right-center alley to push across the eighth run for the Mustangs before freshman
Daylan Inkman drove a single back through the box to plate Griffin from second, 9-0.
Caraway and Woolsey each logged a multi-hit effort as all nine players in the starting lineup recorded a hit for the Mustangs.
MSU Texas broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the first. After loading the bases with no outs, a line drive-double play erased Caraway at third. Muniz poked Rylee Willmon's first pitch offering down the left field line just onto the outfield grass to push Eropkin home and put runners on the corners. Woolsey grounded a single through the middle of the infield to score Lindgren and stake the Mustangs to a 2-0 edge.
The Mustangs tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the second following a Cameron miscue. Inkman reached on an error when Eropkin stroked a double into the right-center alley, 3-0.
Willmon fell to 3-2 for the Aggies allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with a walk and two HBP over 1 2/3 innings.
