LOS ANGELES, California – 10th seeded Midwestern State meets second seeded Cal State, Los Angeles on Saturday night in the Second Round of the Division II Men's Soccer Championships. Match time is slated for 8 p.m. Central Time.
SERIES HISTORY
Midwestern State holds a 2-0 edge over Cal State, Los Angeles in a series that has been dormant since 2000. The Mustangs edged the Golden Eagles in Wichita Falls that year, 1-0, and earned a 3-2 win in Los Angeles in 1997.
PLAYOFF PRIMER
Automatic Qualifier Midwestern State received the No. 10 seed after posting a 15-4 record and winning the Lone Star Conference Tournament Title. The Mustangs then upended seventh seeded UC San Diego in the First Round of the Division II Men's Soccer Championships, 1-0. Cal State, Los Angeles received the second seed out of Super-Region four and a first round bye. The Golden Eagles are unbeaten in 2019, compiling a 16-0-2 record.
LAMPE SAYS NO
Taylor Lampe made eight saves, including a stop on a 48th minute penalty kick, to lead the Mustangs to a First Round win on Thursday night. The eight saves set a new season-high for the junior, surpassing the seven stops he made against West Texas A&M on October 31. With the win, Lampe improved to 13-4 on the season. He has posted nine shutouts.
FLORES FINISHING WITH A FLOURISH
Carlos Flores has netted the game-winner in back-to-back games to lift the Mustangs to 1-0 wins over St. Mary's in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Finals and UC San Diego in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Flores now has 16 points, good for a second place tie with
Sebastian Venegas and three behind team leader
Sergio Lara.
ROLLING THROUGH RANKED OPPONENTS
When Midwestern State takes the field on Saturday night against No. 3 Cal State, Los Angeles, it will be the fifth time this season the Mustangs have squared off against a ranked opponent. MSU has posted a 3-1 record against ranked sides, with wins over No. 4 West Texas A&M, No. 20 Texas A&M International, and No. 11 St. Mary's. The lone loss came back on October 26 when then No. 16 St. Mary's defeated the Mustangs 3-2 in double overtime.
A MINUTE WITH MEACHUM
Michael Meachum kicked off his second year as Head Coach at Midwestern State with a 2-0 win over Dixie State on September 5 at Stang Park. Meachum posted a 16-1-3 mark in his first season at the helm.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Cal State, Los Angeles is unbeaten in 2019, compiling a 16-0-2 mark. Last time out, the Golden Eagles fell in penalty kicks, 5-4, to Cal Poly Pomona in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Finals. The second seeded Golden Eagles have surrendered just seven goals this season or 0.374 goals per game, placing them second in all of Division II in goals against average (211 teams). Junior midfielder David Elizaga paces the squad with seven goals and 19 points. Goalkeeper Alexander Brems has notched nine shutouts and his goals against average of 0.378 places him third in the country (150 ranked).
