CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M tallied three second half goals to come from behind and defeat Midwestern State, 3-1, on Thursday night in a Lone Star Conference match at The Pitch.
"West Texas is a very technical team and their pressure got to us at times tonight," MSU Coach
Ryan Spence said. "They finished their chances, especially in that second half."
Emma Baley opened the scoring in the 19th minute, converting an
Imani Morlock pass to give MSU a 1-0 edge. The sophomore has scored in back-to-back games after failing to score in each of her first 13 games played to start the year.
"Emma made a great back post run, cut in front of the defender and was able to head home Morlock's cross," Coach Spence said.
The Mustangs carried a 1-0 lead into the half, despite being outshot by the Lady Buffs, 8-3.
West Texas A&M erupted in the second half, scoring all of their goals in a span of 28 minutes. Marlene Van Mourik tied the game in the 53rd minute with a strike from outside the 18-yard box that eluded the leaping try of
Aubrey Pettett. Maliyah Mendoza gave the Lady Buffs the lead for good in the 79th minute off a Morlock turnover before Samantha Silvestre provided some insurance just over a minute later.
"I look for us to regroup from this one and come out on Saturday against Eastern New Mexico ready to go," Coach Spence said.
