SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State closed the game on a 25-4 run over the final 5:26 to erase a 64-47 deficit to defeat Midwestern State, 72-67, on Saturday afternoon at the Junell Center in San Angelo.
The Rams went 7-for-8 from the floor and 10-for-11 from the free throw line during the run to stun the Mustangs for their sixth-straight loss on the road.
Klair Crouch led ASU with a game high 21 points, going 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Ronald Bell added 14 and Antonio Singleton had 11. Singleton scored eight of his points during the final stretch with all but two coming from the free throw line. James Kirksey poured in seven of his nine points as the Rams made the late push.
MSU Texas was led by junior
Gilbert Thomas, Jr., with a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds. D'Monta Harris added 13 points for the Maroon and Gold while
Bishop Coulter had 11.
Thomas recorded all 17 points and seven boards in the first half as the Maroon and Gold built a 36-25 lead going into the break. The Houston native put up 13 of the team's first 17 points. Harris added nine and Coulter had six as the trio combined for 32 of the team's 36 points going into the intermission.
MSU Texas led by double-digits in the second half up until the late surge by ASU. The Mustangs pushed the advantage to as many as 17 as late as the 5:40 mark before missing their final six shots from the floor.
