DENTON, Texas – Junior
Mica Schneider scored 17 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter as Midwestern State poured in 37 in the final frame to erase a 15-point deficit in the final period. The Mustangs snapped a six-game road losing streak dating back to last season with a 76-72 thriller against Texas Woman's on Thursday at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.
MSU Texas shot 55.6 percent (10-of-18) in the fourth quarter while limiting the Pioneers to just 10.0 percent (1-for-10) over the final 10 minutes of action.
Schneider scored a career-best 19 on 5-of-13 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers and going 7-of-9 from the free throw line. The Boerne native handed out three assists and pulled down three rebounds in the winning effort. She went 4-for-6 from the field in the final quarter and earned all nine trips to the charity stripe in the final 10 minutes.
In a game decided by free throw shooting, MSU Texas went 20-of-27 in the second half and finished 30-of-45 (66.7 percent) while the Pioneers went 27-of-42, the most free throws the Mustangs have allowed this season.
Sophomore
Kityana Diaz contributed a career-best 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting with a pair of treys. The Canyon native recorded her seventh game in double figures while going 4-of-6 from the free throw line.
Sophomore
Hannah Reynolds matched Dorcas Perkins (1982-83) with a block in the final minute to move into sixth all-time on the single-season charts with her 39
th rejection of the campaign. The Prosper product added 13 points for her 11
th game in double-figures.
MSU Texas entered the fourth quarter trailing 54-39 before opening with a 19-4 run to tie the game at 58 with 5:05 remaining. The Mustangs limited TWU to a 0-for-7 start from the floor to mount the comeback.
Tied at 69, Kizart drove from the right wing to the left block and drained a layup under the basket to give the Maroon and Gold the lead for good. The senior chased down a long rebound on the ensuing possession to allow the Mustangs to extend the lead from the charity stripe.
The Pioneers cut the deficit to two with three seconds remaining on a pair of free throws, but Schneider iced the game by knocking down both attempts to secure the win.
Carissa Moody paced the Pioneers with her eighth double-double of the season, going for 20 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out. Macy Wilkerson added 17 for TWU, going 11-of-16 from the free throw line.
