Valiant comeback effort falls short against Texas A&M-Kingsville

THE RUNDOWN
KINGSVILLE, Texas – Sophomore Hannah Reynolds grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to go along with her second double-double of the season and senior Chelcie Kizart poured in 15 points, but Midwestern State was unable to maintain a late lead in a 71-67 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Trailing 66-58 with just over three minutes to play, junior Mica Schneider connected on a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to five. Kizart stole the ball near midcourt and found Kityana Diaz under the basket who hit the layup and the ensuing free throw to trim the hole to 66-64. After a stop on the defensive end, Kizart buried her second trey of the night to give the Mustangs the lead, 67-66.

Despite holding the Javelinas without a field goal for the final six minutes of the contest, TAMUK converted on 5-of-8 free throw opportunities down the stretch to regain the lead for good.

Rachel Tapps hit the first shot from the charity stripe with 1:26 to play to tie the game at 67. With 31 seconds to play Brynae Thompson converted both attempts from the free throw line to give the Javelinas the lead. Following a missed 3-pointer by the Maroon and Gold, Kristina Kana missed the first attempt and made the second to stretch the lead to three, 70-67, with 14 seconds remaining.

Junior Liz Cathcart had a good look at the game-tying attempt with nine seconds to go, but the shot hit the back iron and bounced out.

Thompson finished with a game-high 22 for the Javelinas, going 10-of-14 from the free throw line. Danielle Meador and Bri-Anna Soliz each added 16 as the trio combined for 54 of the 71 points for TAMUK.

Reynolds scored 10 points and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds for her second double-double in the last three games. The Prosper native added four rejections to match Jel-ani Armstrong for the fifth-most in program history with 75.

Kizart and Schneider scored 15 and 12 points, respectively, and combined for 11 of the team's 14 assists.
