Quick starting @MWSUFootball blows past Humboldt State, 55-12

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 11 Midwestern State scored on its first six possessions on the way to a 55-12 season opening rout of Humboldt State (Calif.) Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

Senior quarterback Layton Rabb finished a nearly perfect half connecting on 15-of-17 passes for 273 yards and five touchdowns including strikes to sophomore Bryce Martinez (14, 47), junior Xavier Land (12), redshirt-freshman Anthony Tennison (58) and sophomore Juwan Johnson (8).

Rabb's only two incompletions were dropped passes as he came up a touchdown shy of matching his own program single game record while moving past Daniel Polk (38 TDs, 2004-07) into third place on the career touchdowns list.

Senior running back Vincent Johnson got the Mustangs off to a quick start with a 75-yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage as the Lubbock native needed just seven carries to deliver his sixth career 100-yard rushing performance going for 102 yards on seven carries.

Johnson also ran past Brandon Kelsey (2,156 yards / 2009-12) into sixth place on MSU's all-time rushing list with 2,158 yards.

The second half belonged to sophomore Zach Purcell, who connected on 10-of-15 passes for 106 yards and two more touchdowns connecting with Kylan Harrison for 24 yards in the third quarter and Sam Frederick for 7 yards in the fourth.

Freshman Donaven Lloyd ran for 71 yards on eight carries in his debut and senior Nicholas Gabriel added 41 yards on nine carries, while 12 difference receivers caught passes for the Mustangs led by Johnson's 90 yards on six receptions.

The Midwestern State defense recorded seven tackles for loss with four sacks led by junior Marcus Wilkerson, who had six total tackles.

Freshman A'quan Randolph and junior Jaylon Abdul-Karim notched sacks for MSU Texas, while Alec DiValerio, Zach Edwards, Melik Owens and Wensley Jacinthe were credited with a half-sack each.

Midwestern State takes on No. 2 West Florida next Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
