THE RUNDOWN
PORTALES, N.M. – Midwestern State was plagued by six errors, including four in the nightcap, in a pair of one-run setbacks at Eastern New Mexico.
The Mustangs mounted a late rally in the opener, but came up shy, 7-6. In the nightcap, sophomore outfielder
Kelsey Eropkin blasted a game-tying home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Greyhounds walked off in the bottom of the inning, 5-4.
In the first game, ENMU struck first in the bottom of the first. A triple by Erikka Burke followed a leadoff hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly pushed across the second run for the Greyhounds.
The Mustangs responded with a pair of runs on a two out rally in the third. Freshman shortstop
Caycee Griffin lined a single back through the box before scoring from first on a double into the left-center alley from junior second baseman
Samantha Loos.
ENMU scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth before a three-run home run from Elena Garcia allowed the Greyhounds to stretch the lead to 7-3.
Senior catcher
Amanda Thomas launched a three-run bomb to left in the top of the sixth, scoring
Tucker Caraway and
Lauren Lindgren to cut it to one, but ENMU retired the side in order in the seventh to close out the game.
In the nightcap, junior starting pitcher
Abbie Lancaster fanned a season-high six, giving up two earned runs on three hits in six innings of work.
The Greyhounds again posted a pair of runs in the home half of the first, but the Maroon and Gold answered to take the lead in the third. Junior
Carli Woolsey launched a leadoff blast to get things started. Loos reached via a hit-by-pitch and advanced to third when Eropkin reached on an error. Senior third baseman
Kelcee Thompson pulled a single through the left-side of the infield to score Loos before Caraway hooked a double down the line in left to take the lead.
A pair of errors in the fifth allowed Eastern to tie the game. ENMU took the lead in the sixth on a safety-squeeze off the bat of Courtney Vigil.
After two quick outs in the top of the seventh, things looked dire for the Mustangs. Eropkin's opposite-field shot to right-center off Hanna Gary tied the game at four.
In the bottom of the seventh, ENMU's Ashley Lopez drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Garcia singled up the middle and Lindgren's throw from center was not in time at the plate, allowing the Greyhounds to walk off with the win.
