@MSUMustangs tripped up by No. 8-ranked Rattlers

THE RUNDOWN
SAN ANTONIO – The 11th-ranked MSU Texas women's tennis team faltered in the season-opener on the road against eighth-ranked St. Mary's, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at Rohrbach Stadium in San Antonio.

Midwestern State got off to a slow start in doubles, dropping the first two matches before getting on the board. The MSU duo of Anna Claire Gerletti and Emilija Segetlija slipped up, 8-1, to Alex Corder and Ally Maciel at the No. 3 line. The Mustang's fifth-ranked pair of Maddy Coffman and Bianca Duff pushed ninth-ranked Kaylin Kruseman and Tyra Timm to the limit before faltering late, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles.

The tandem of Greta Lazzarotto and Ashley Ramirez recorded the first win of the season for the Maroon and Gold, downing Paulina Torres and Rani Goodland, 8-6, at the No. 2 line to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

Any hopes Midwestern State had of coming back in singles were quickly thwarted as St. Mary's won four-of-six first sets and took the first five singles matches.

The Rattlers' Corder defeated sophomore Anna Claire Gerletti, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 to move the score to 3-1 before junior Greta Lazzarotto was bested by Maciel, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. St. Mary's clinched the match when Isabelle Bergman knocked off sophomore Emilija Segetlija, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot to put the Rattlers up 5-1.

MSU junior Maddy Coffman was unable to force a third set, dropping a tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6 (4) to 48th-ranked Kruseman at the No. 1 line. Sophomore Ashley Ramirez earned a first-set win over Goodland at No. 4, but was unable to close out the match, falling in three, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Sophomore Bianca Duff claimed the first singles win for Midwestern State, taking a narrow three-set win over Timm at No. 2, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5
