Mustangs drop a wild one to Texas A&M-Commerce

DENTON, Texas -- Jaron Imbriani's 30-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right as time expired to end a wild 20 hours of storms, lightning and play in Midwestern State's brewing rivalry with Texas A&M-Commerce.

The missed field goal allowed the ninth-ranked Lions to escape with a 20-19 win over No. 4 MSU Texas, but wasn't without a bit of controversy on another Imbrani field attempt with 2:55 to play.

His 39-yard field goal attempt was blocked at the line of scrimmage by Brandon Bascue before appeared to roll to the Lions' 5-yard line where Texas A&M-Commerce sophomore defensive back Alex Shillow appeared to touch the ball allowing MSU Texas' Alec DiValerio to pick up the ball and run it into the end zone.

The officials initially awarded the Mustangs with a touchdown before reversing the call following a conference. The touchdown would have given MSU Texas a 25-20 lead with a point-after pending.

Midwestern State forced Texas A&M-Commerce to punt to earn more possession.

Sophomore wideout Juwan Johnson returned Tristan Perry's punt to 21 yards to give MSU Texas the ball at its own 45-yard line.

Rabb connected on strikes of 21 and 16 yards to Xavier Land to push the ball to the A&M-Commerce 18-yard line before a substitution infraction moved it five yards closer. Imbriani's last second attempt, however, sailed to the right.

It capped a crazy day as the teams played to a 10-10 draw through halftime Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls. The weather didn't cooperate as two lightning delays forced the game to Sunday and a compromise landed the remainder of play to Apogee Stadium in Denton.

Senior running back Vincent Johnson gave the Mustangs their lone lead of the second half on a 9-yard run to camp a 7-play, 80-yard drive for a 17-10 edge with 8:12 to go in the third quarter.

Texas A&M-Commerce answered with a 26-yard Kristov Martinez field before quarterback Kane Wilson finished off a 13-play, 98-yard drive with a 4-yard run with 11:22 to play giving the Lions a 20-17 edge.

A&M-Commerce gave the Mustangs a safety when an errant punt snap went through the end zone with 8:53 to go.

Vincent Johnson paced Midwestern State with 113 yards on 17 carries, while Juwan Johnson delivered his fifth consecutive 100-yard effort making six catches for 106 yards. Land matched a career high with 10 catches for 96 yards, while junior Tyrique Edwards made four receptions for 21 yards in his return.

Rabb completed 22-of-47 passes for a season low 234 yards with one interception.

Midwestern State hits the road to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night at Javelina Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
