THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – For the second time in the last three years, Midwestern State came out on the winning end of a golden goal moment against Colorado State-Pueblo as freshman defender
Savannah Alford lifted the Mustangs to a 1-0 overtime victory in the 95th minute with her first collegiate goal Friday evening at Stang Park.
After being held to just five shot attempts with three on goal, Alford made the most of a free kick opportunity in the first extra period with a header goal into the right corner of the net off
Destinee Williamson's kick from 20 yards out.
Colorado State-Pueblo (1-1-0) threatened multiple times throughout the contest, just missing a pair of opportunities in the opening half when Cara Siegel's shots hit the post and crossbar in the first 20 minutes of action.
For Midwestern State (2-1-0),
Madison Williams' attempt in the 37th minute barely missed the inside of the left post to send the teams into halftime scoreless after both placed one shot on goal in the period.
In the second half, Midwestern placed two of its three shots on frame while the ThunderWolves managed half of their six attempts on goal only to come up short.
Courtney Burnette kept CSU-Pueblo off the board in the 92nd minute of overtime with her fifth save of the night leading up to Alford's golden goal.
