@MWSUVball drops rivalry match to Cameron in four sets

THE RUNDOWN
LAWTON, Okla. – A season-high 19 kills for junior outside hitter Rockelle Gholson was not enough for Midwestern State Tuesday evening as Cameron benefitted from a quick start to claim a 3-1 win in a Red River Rivalry matchup at Aggie Gym.

Cameron (4-8, 2-3 LSC) scored the first five points of the match before building a 10-4 lead to hold the momentum early. Midwestern State (7-6, 2-3 LSC) closed within four points of the Aggies before CU put together a 7-2 run to take a nine-point advantage at 19-10. The Mustangs rallied with Gholson's three kills leading the charge in an MSU comeback to pull within a pair at 21-19. Cameron stretched its lead back to four before MSU answered again with a 4-0 spurt as a Gholson ace evened the set at 23 apiece. Cameron regained a lead with a kill from Brook Conley before Paige Dixon ended the frame with a kill of her own for a 25-23 score.

In the second set, Cameron hit .269 while holding MSU to a -.029 attacking percentage in a 25-14 victory. The Aggies put together a 12-3 midway through the frame before taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

After intermission, the Mustangs were led by Gholson's six kills while limiting the Aggies to a negative hitting percentage in claiming a 25-23 win in the third set. It was a tight set the entire way with neither team building more than a three-point edge. Back-to-back attacking errors by the Aggies gave the Mustangs set point at 24-21 before MSU held off a late push by CU with an Addison Semer kill giving the Mustangs the set.

Cameron hit a match-best .275 in the fourth set, building an 11-3 lead before holding off an MSU rally for a 25-20 win to claim the match.
