@MWSUVball suffers 3-1 defeat to Western New Mexico in home opener

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State committed 15 service errors while being held to a .148 hitting percentage to fall 3-1 to Western New Mexico in its home opener Friday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Western New Mexico (2-9, 2-1 LSC) controlled the momentum early, hitting .375 in the opening set while using a 7-1 run midway through the frame to claim a 25-17 win.

Senior outside hitter Meghan Bettis erupted for six kills and a pair of aces in the second game to lead Midwestern State (6-5, 1-2 LSC) to a dominant 25-15 victory. MSU built a cushion in the early going, building as much as an 11-point advantage in the set.

Following intermission, Western squeaked out a 25-23 third set victory despite seven kills from Bettis with MSU posting six service errors in the game. WNMU jumped out to a 10-3 advantage before Midwestern rallied late with a 6-2 run to pull within a point at 22-21. However, kills from Kelli McGhiey and Alanna Watt down the stretch helped push the visitors to a 2-1 lead in the match.

A match-high 10 attack errors prevented MSU from forcing a decisive fifth set with WNMU closing out the fourth game on an 11-3 run to record a 25-17 win.
