Mustangs split pair of matches Friday at home

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State played to a doubleheader split with an 8-1 win over Collin College (Texas) while suffering a 5-4 defeat to Seward County (Kan.) Friday at the MSU Tennis Center.

The 21st-ranked Mustangs (11-6) began the day taking two of three doubles matches against Collin College, ranked 11th in the NJCAA poll. Dylan Hall and Angel Palacios earned an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles while Chris Norrie and Denney Norrie came away with an 8-3 win on court three. At No. 1 doubles, Ramon Toyos and Dillon Pineda fell to the 16th-ranked duo of Daniel Stormon and Akinori Wada, 8-6.

The Maroon and Gold cruised in singles, winning all six courts in straight sets for the 8-1 victory.

Seward County (18-4), ranked fourth in the NJCAA, opened up a 2-1 advantage on the Mustangs after doubles play with wins at two and three. Toyos and Pineda took down the No. 1 tandem of Carlos Anez and Ondrej Nice, 8-3, to earn MSU's first point of the match.

Nice extended the Seward lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Vasudev Vijayaraman at No. 3 singles.

The Mustangs answered back with Palacios and Toyos collecting straight-set wins at the top two positions to knot the match at 3-3.

With Hall leading 6-3, 4-3 on court four, Przemek Zielinski collected a win by default in a controversial call that gave the Saints a 4-3 advantage in the match. Claudio Quinones followed with a 6-4, 6-2 match-clinching win over Pineda at No. 5 singles.

On court six, Chris Norrie battled to a 7-5 first set win before Ngoni Makambwa retired prior to the start of the second set for a 5-4 final.

Midwestern State hosts No. 39 Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) for Senior Day tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the MSU Tennis Center. Join the Mustangs 10 minutes prior to the match as they honor seniors Ramon Toyos and Chris Norrie.
