Mustangs head south for battle against No. 2 Angelo State

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Coming off its first Lone Star Conference sweep of the season, Midwestern State hits the road to take on its second nationally-ranked opponent in three weeks in No. 2 Angelo State.

The Mustangs and Rambelles open the series Friday with first pitch set for 7 p.m. from Mayer Field in San Angelo. The teams will battle for a series win Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
- Midwestern State captured its third LSC series win in a three-game sweep of Western New Mexico last weekend at Mustangs Park
- MSU overcame six errors with a six-run fourth inning to claim an 8-3 win in the series opener with senior Erin Knox going 3-for-3 while fanning a career-high eight batters
- In game two, a three-run home run for Misty Muniz in the fifth inning propelled MSU in front before taking a 6-2 win to take the series
- MSU scored eight unanswered runs en route to an 8-1 victory in the series finale with Lauren Lindgren leading the way with three hits, three RBI and two runs
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State enters the weekend with a 17-20 overall record and 8-13 mark in the LSC for ninth in the conference standings
- The Mustangs are led by senior pitcher/first baseman Erin Knox with a .359 batting average, recording 37 hits, 19 RBI, 18 runs, 18 walks and nine doubles this season
- Freshman center fielder Lauren Lindgren has also shined for the Maroon and Gold in her first collegiate season with a team-high 43 hits, 30 runs, 22 RBI and 11 walks while sporting a .341 hitting clip
- Sophomore designated player Taylor Mordecai jumped back over .300 last weekend for a .307 average with 31 hits, 16 runs, 14 RBI and seven doubles on the year
- After allowing just one earned run in two complete games last weekend, Knox lowered her team-best ERA to 2.90, holding opponents to a .237 average at the plate for a 7-7 record on the season
- Sophomore Peyton Helton has also been strong for MSU in the circle, carrying a 3.58 ERA with seven wins and 13 complete games in 17 starts and 113.1 innings of work
 
SCOUTING THE RAMBELLES
- Angelo State comes in at 38-4 overall with a 15-3 mark in the LSC to sit atop the conference standings
- The Rambelles put together a school record 26-game win streak from Feb. 10-Mar. 18 before falling to No. 12 West Texas A&M in extra innings at home
- ASU dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in the NFCA Division II poll this week after falling twice to Tarleton State last weekend in Stephenville
- The dynamic pitching duo of junior Brandy Marlett and senior Kenedy Urbany have paced Angelo State this season with the Rambelles leading the nation with 16 shutouts and ranking sixth with a 1.43 ERA
- Marlett ranks sixth nationally with 189 strikeouts and 19 wins this season while carrying a 1.32 ERA
- Urbany leads the LSC and ranks 11th in the nation with a 0.96 ERA while tallying 14 wins in the circle
- The ASU defense has backed up its strong pitching with a .972 fielding percentage to rank 13th in the country
- At the plate, freshman outfielder Courtney Barnhill leads the Rambelles with a .424 clip with 50 hits including 10 doubles and 10 home runs for 36 RBI and 36 runs scored
- Sophomore infielder Bailey Wallace adds a .340 average for ASU with 34 runs scored while sophomore catcher Taegan Kirk is hitting .336 with 36 RBI and 12 doubles
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Angelo State carries a 28-18 edge in the all-time series and 14-4 record at home against Midwestern State
- The Mustangs are 11-16 playing against a nationally-ranked ASU team, last taking a 3-1 series win against the 12th-ranked Rambelles at Mustangs Park in 2015
- ASU claimed the series last season in San Angelo, 3-1, with the Mustangs avoiding a sweep with a 10-8 win in the finale
- The Rambelles have won 14 of the last 19 meetings going back to the 2011 season
